Key Points of Origin of Cacao in Zamora Chinchipe:
Antique: Scientific evidence, including DNA analysis and starch remains, dates back 5,300 to 5,500 years, making it the oldest evidence of cocoa use in America.
Mayo-Chinchipe culture or Ancient People: It was established that this culture used cacao in their daily life, evidenced by ceramic vessels and stone bowls found in the Palanda canton
Cradle of Cacao: This discovery positions the Ecuadorian Amazon, and not Mesoamerica, as the center of origin of cacao domestication.
National Cocoa / Cacao Nacional: The cocoa from this area is related to the Nacional Fino de Aroma variety, valued worldwide.
